Delores Agnes Broers was born at home on October 29, 1927, in Waukon Township, to Henry and Kate (Reiners) Broers. She was raised in Gary, MN, on the family farm. She was one of 15 children. She attended country school through 8th grade. She would work on the farm by feeding and milking the cows and helping with haying and harvesting. She would often tell stories about growing up on the farm with her family and would laugh about the good times her and her siblings had.
She worked as a babysitter and a waitress at the Red Apple shortly after she left the family farm. Delores met the love of her life, Leo Winter, at a dance in Waubun, MN. Leo brought his mom for lunch at the Red Apple and told his mom that Delores was his girlfriend. Delores and Leo were united in marriage on July 25, 1950, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen, MN. They made their home in Mahnomen and started Winter Truck Line in 1950 and Winter Repair in 1974. Delores helped to run Winter Truck Line out of their home and picked potatoes at Oxley Hereford Ranch to make ends meet. They moved to their home in 1964 and raised three daughters and five sons. In November of 1979, Leo passed away and Delores remained in their home and continued to run the truck line with her sons and daughters.
She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She loved socializing with friends and family during holidays, weekends, and special occasions. She loved playing cards, bowling in a bowling league, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, collecting horses to decorate her house, boat rides, driving through the country, writing songs, and spending time with family in her trailer at Twin Lakes. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Leo in the motorhome and going on trips with her sisters. She always made sure she had food ready and that everyone was fed including sneaking chocolates to the great grandchildren. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America, Family Aid, Legion Auxiliary, National Foresters, and VFW. She was the life of the party, a hard worker, a great listener, a great friend, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Delores is survived by eight children: Carolyn (James) Barrows of Fargo, ND, William (Marsha) Winter of Fargo, ND, Barbara (Nyal) Peterson of Mahnomen, MN, Steven (Debra) Winter of Mahnomen, MN, Richard (Debra) Winter of Mahnomen, MN, James (Jody) Winter of Zimmerman, MN, David (Penny) Winter of Mahnomen, MN, Kimberly (Mike) Lang of Twin Valley, MN; 19 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren; brother, Dudley Broers of Mahnomen, MN.
