Obituary

G. Dean Paul, age 72, of Mahnomen, MN, formerly of Grand Forks, ND, died Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Dean was born on June 25, 1937 in Grafton, ND, the only son of Arthur and Elsie (Schultz) Paul. He grew up and attended school in Grafton. Following his schooling, Dean entered the United States Navy, actively serving his country from 1955-1957, followed by the Navy Reserves until an honorable discharge in 1962. On June 21, 1958 Dean was united in marriage to Shirley Sleeth in Fosston, MN. The couple made their home in Grand Forks, ND, where Dean drove semi-truck for Evans Transfer, Dan Dugan, Indian Head, Transport Inc., and Orchid Oil until his retirement in 1998. In 1999, Dean and Shirley moved to Arizona for a few years before settling in Mahnomen in 2003.

Spending time with family and friends was always a priority to Dean. He also enjoyed camping, fishing and following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Dean was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen and a proud veteran that held a membership with the American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post 31 of Mahnomen.

Dean is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley, of Mahnomen; a son, Wayne (Becky) Paul of Reynolds, ND; a daughter, Barbara Paul of Brooklyn Park, MN; three grandchildren: Brittany, Brady and Jacob; one sister, Janet Patton of El Monte, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:00 am at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen with Father Mario Prada as officiant. Special music was provided by Robin Sand with Diane Spaeth as pianist and Carol Buschette as the cantor. Pallbearers were Dale Pazdernik, Ken Svaleson, Jeff Jvene, Dan Halland, Mike Halland and Mark Hoiland. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Hoiland, Gary Strand, Scott Nesvold, Joel Goldsmith, Richard Schamberger, Pat McCarthy and David McCarthy. Military honors were provided by Mahnomen American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post #31. Visitation was held Friday, February 5, 2010 also at the church from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm.

Interment was at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
