David J.
Underdahl
Jan 23, 1947 — Jan 26, 2025
Twin Valley
David Underdahl, age 78, of Twin Valley, MN, passed away surrounded by his family, on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
David Jerome Underdahl was born on January 23, 1947, in Ada, MN, to Lloyd and Pearl (Burns) Underdahl. He was baptized in Ada and Confirmed in Faith at East Marsh River Lutheran Church. As a young boy, Dave lived west of Ada, where his family operated the Anthony Country Store. Dave spent his early childhood helping at the store and working on nearby farms. He and his family then moved to Halstad, MN, where he attended school and helped his parents in the family owned Underdahl Variety Store. Dave's strong work ethic led him to purchase a house and land by the age of 16, where he later raised his family. He always continued to put in any hours of work necessary to provide for his family. Dave worked in various roles throughout his life, from his time at Simonson's gas station in Fargo, ND, to several years working with Stanley Habedank Construction. He later owned and drove semi-truck and also worked alongside his dear friend, Ernie Hilde, on the Hilde farm. Dave eventually found work at the Norman County Highway Department where he dedicated nearly 30 years of his career. Dave retired in 2014, as the Assistant Maintenance Foreman. He continued to work every summer for the Norman County Highway Department until 2017.
On April 2, 1976, David was united in marriage to Sandra Syverson, at which time he lovingly welcomed Travis and Shane into his life. Within a few years, they welcomed two additional sons, Cody and Jason, to complete their family. Dave's family was his greatest treasure. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Music was a lifelong passion for Dave. Beginning early in his teens, he played in his father's band, Lloyd De Boy Orchestra, performing at dances, on the radio, and even on local television. Over the years, Dave shared his musical talent with many, playing often with the Backwoods Boys, Driftwood, the Buengs, and the Trinity Singers, forming lasting friendships with fellow musicians.
David's faith was a steady and unwavering anchor in his life. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Twin Valley, where he served on several boards and as church council president for many years. He and Sandi were also instrumental on the church cemetery board. A gifted mechanic and woodworker, David had a knack for fixing anything that came his way. He enjoyed tinkering on projects, driving big machinery, and had a special appreciation for classic cars. His love for the outdoors, particularly hunting and spending time at the lake, added to the many ways he embraced life's simple pleasures. They enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Island Lake where Dave spent many hours pulling his kids and then eventually the grandkids behind the pontoon. Even though his declining health caused them to sell the cabin, Dave and Sandi continued their love of travel. They had visited 43 states with the most recent trip being to Alaska last summer. Above all, he truly cherished his kids and grandkids and was their biggest supporter. After a day around family, Dave always remarked "This was a good day" and true love was evident in his smiling eyes.
Dave's legacy of love, faith, and devotion to family will forever be cherished by all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community he so deeply cared for.
Dave is survived by his wife, Sandi of Twin Valley; sons, Travis (Kimberly), Shane (Sarah), Cody (Laura), and Jason (Genna); 10 grandchildren: Cheyanne (Aaron), Faith (Jake), Noah, Brodie, Ellie, Emily, Adley, Colton, Brooks, and Coy; and his great grandchildren: Waylon Stenerson, Walker Reamer, and Winona Stenerson, and a new great-grandbaby expected in June. He is also survived by his sisters, Myrna (Duane) Thornton; Pam (Charlie) Gunnerson; sister-in-law, Shirley Kappes; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Lloyd and Pearl; brothers, Dennis and Boyd; sister, Carlisle Underdahl, and an infant sister; and one nephew, Jeremy Thornton.
