David Merkins, age 72, of Ada, Minnesota, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in Essentia Health, Fargo, North Dakota.
David Hallace Merkins was born August 29, 1938, the son of Hallace and Mildred (Carter) Merkins on the family farm northwest of Ada. David attended country school for two years before going to school in Ada, where he graduated with the class of 1956. He furthered his education for two years at the University of Minnesota Agricultural School in St. Paul, Minnesota. At that time, David returned home to farm with his father. On September 24, 1960, David was united in marriage to LoAnn Olson in Augustana Lutheran Church near Halstad, Minnesota. The couple made their home on the family farm where they raised their three children. David raised registered Angus cattle during his farming career, and in the mid-1990's, retired and worked for area neighbors part-time for several years.
David was a member of Farm Bureau, the Red River Angus Association and the Minnesota State Angus Association. Besides his love of farming, David enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and working with horses. He loved spending time with friends and family, but he truly treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchild.
David is survived by his wife of 50 years, LoAnn Merkins of Ada, MN; son, Scott (Fiancé, Cheryl Macy) Merkins of Malvern, OH; daughters, Sheri (Randy) Baker of Omaha, NE and Sue (Lee) Colburn of Watertown, SD; a sister, Ellen Anderson of Fergus Falls, MN; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
Funeral Services was held on Monday, May 23rd at 10:00 AM in Zion Lutheran Church, Ada. Visitation was Sunday from 5-7 PM at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation was also one hour before services at the church on Monday. Officiating was Pastor Dennis O'Neill with Janet O'Neill serving as organist. Pallbearers were Duane Buness, Wesley Stai, DJ Fassbender, Kristopher Merkins, Josh Mathsen and Michael Vedder.
