Obituary

Darrell Walz, age 66, of Mahnomen, MN, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at his home.

Darrell Mitchell Walz was born June 22, 1957, in Fosston, MN, along with his twin brother, Dean, to Leander and Lucille (Teuber) Walz.  He grew up near Beaulieu, MN, and graduated from Mahnomen High School with the Class of 1975.  After graduation, Darrell entered the United States Navy and faithfully served.  Following his honorable discharge in 1979, he made his home in Oregon with his brother, Ron.  While in Oregon, Darrell lived and worked with his brother building houses on the coast. After a couple years, he moved back to Minnesota.  Upon returning to the Mahnomen area, Darrell assisted the contractors in a building project at the Mahnomen Public School and began his career as an over the road trucker.  He worked for Spielman Feed, Winter Truck Line and Kirsch Trucking, before purchasing his own semi-truck.   Darrell hauled freight from coast to coast and up to Alaska.  He knew the ins and outs of the interstate system and could tell you about the top landmarks plus the best places to eat.

Darrell enjoyed the great outdoors and activities like hunting, fishing and shooting guns, in addition to his rose bushes in front of the house.   He also spent much of his spare time working crossword puzzles, reading a variety of books and the daily newspaper. Darrell could come off as a gruff fella, but he really was caring and tenderhearted.  He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  Darrell had a vast knowledge of many things which he was always willing to share with family and friends along with just shoot'n the breeze over anything. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Darrell is survived by his brothers: Gerald (Karen) of Duluth, MN, Lee (Janet) of Brockville, Ontario, Raye (Marie) of Kendall, WI, and twin brother, Dean (Diane) of Mahnomen; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ron and Russell.
