Daniel Steichen, age 68, of Waubun, MN, died on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at his home, under the care of his family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Daniel, the son of Milton and Leona (Anderson) Steichen, was born on June 18, 1951, in Detroit Lakes, MN.  He was raised in the Waubun area where he attended school.  On Dec 4, 1971, Daniel married his high school sweetheart, Julie Heisler.  They made their home in Waubun and were blessed with two children, Peter and Mina.  Over the years, they also welcomed several foster children into their home.   In his younger years, Daniel worked in the farming and logging professions.  He was a cowboy at heart and enjoyed caring for his horses.  In the early 1990's, Daniel began working for the Shooting Star Casino where he spent the remainder of this career.  Due to his heath, Daniel choose to retire in 2010.

Daniel loved the outdoors and looked forward to being in the woods, especially hunting with his grandsons and driving around the countryside.  He was often found on his lawnmower caring for his yard and more recently mowing for neighbors and friends.  Daniel was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He proudly welcomed his own grandchildren as well as the many grandkids who came into his life through the foster care families.  The past few years had been challenging with his health, but Daniel's positive attitude was ever present and will be missed by so many.

The family would like to show their appreciation to everyone who has helped Daniel through his many health struggles.  They especially want to thank White Earth Home Health, the Mahnomen Health Center Emergency Room Staff, Roger Maris Cancer Center, and Hospice of the Red River Valley, your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Daniel is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julie of Waubun; two children, Peter (Valorie) Steichen of Dilworth, MN, and Mina Spalla of Waubun; his mother, Leona of Auburndale, FL; three sisters: Mary Anna Kragness, Cleone Pridgen, and Rebecca Richards, all of Auburndale; four brothers: Aldean (Linda) of Lake City, FL, Tim (Kim) also of Lake City, Leonard (Janice) of Waubun, and Donald (Jean) of Elmwood, WI; 12 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Milton; and one brother, Peter.

A time of gathering will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun, on Thursday, October 3, 2019 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 pm.  Private inurnment services will take place at a later date.
