Obituary

Cyril "Cy" Flicek, the son of Louis and Rose (Lovin) Flicek, was born on August 14, 1923 in Mahnomen, MN. He grew up and attended school in Mahnomen. Following his high school graduation, Cy attended college at St. John' University as well as NDSU agriculture school. In 1943, he was drafted into the United States Army. Cy proudly served his country during WWII, spending much of his time as a radio operator in the Pacific Theater. In 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Mahnomen where he began working at his family's furniture store. On October 14, 1947 Cy was united in marriage to Mavis Lien. The couple purchased Flicek's Furniture Store and operated it together until 1988 when they retired. After Mavis' death in 1994, Cy continued to make his home in Mahnomen until 2009 at which time he moved to Fayetteville, PA to be near his son. At the age of 88, Cyril died on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Fayetteville.

Cy was a member of the Mahnomen American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post #31, the VFW Post #1226, and the Knights of Columbus Mahnomen Council # 2573. After many years in the furniture business, he also had a knack for refinishing furniture. He enjoyed being outdoors and often took drives in the country simply to see the farmland. For many years, Cy walked to the Red Apple Café several times a day to visit with his coffee crew and find out the latest news. He was an avid sports fan and loved to follow the local Mahnomen teams. By far most important to Cy was his faith and his family, each of which he cherished deeply.

Cy is survived by one daughter, Joanie (Jim) Pray of West Fargo, ND; two sons: Michael (Nancy) of Hagerstown, MD, and Doug (Nancy) of Ramsey, MN; five grandchildren: Tracy (Jamie) Schutt, Mandy (Rich) Couture, Kari (Howard) Holben, David Flicek, and Aaron Flicek; four great-grandchildren: Caleb and Jacob Schutt, and Kate and Scarlett Couture; one brother-in-law, Lloyd (Arvilla) Lien of Dilworth, MN; and four sisters-in-law: Orva Johnson of Portland, OR, Carol (Jr.) Benson of Twin Valley, MN, Joyce Montplaisir of Fargo, ND, and Kathy Lien of Mahnomen, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mavis; one grandson, Joseph Flicek; his sister, Adeline Seifert; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Myrtle and Manford Larson, Gladys and John Frerichs, Walter Johnson, Gus Montplaisir, Milo Lien, and Shirley and Ted Kaiser.
