Obituary

Clayton Ormbreck, 91, of Ulen, MN, died Saturday, October 24, 2015, in the Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.

Clayton Warren Ormbreck was born December 28, 1923, in Ulen to Christian and Christine (Vesterheim) Ormbreck. He attended school, graduating from Ulen High School with the class of 1941. Clayton followed his father in the retail lumber business. He started working for Wilcox Lumber Company in Ulen and in subsequent years, managed lumber yards in Ogema, Twin Valley, McIntosh, Hawley and Lake Park, MN.

Because of failing eyesight, Clayton retired from Wilcox Lumber Company. In 1970, he attended the Minneapolis School for the Blind and learned braille and self-guidance. While in his teens, Clayton developed a strong interest in the technology of radio communication and built a radio using parts from discarded radios. He continued a fascination with radio and received an amateur radio license (HAM) and was assigned the call letters W0EQT. Clayton was active in amateur radio and checked into a network of other "HAM"s each day. Even from his nursing home room.

Clayton and his brothers built a summer cabin on White Earth Lake in 1960 and fished the lake with moderate luck for 50 years. He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, an active member of the Ulen Lions Club for 40 years, and served on the Ulen City Council.

He is survived by his brother, Harlan (Sharon) Ormbreck of Fargo, ND and a cousin, Lois (Ron) King of Mechanicsburg, PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Neal and David Paul.

The family extends their gratitude to the Viking Manor Nursing Home and Hospice of the Red River Valley staff for their loving care.
