Clarice Hovde, 97, of Twin Valley, MN, died Thursday, October 31, 2013, in the Twin Valley Living Center, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Clarice H. Hovde was born in Flom, MN, on May 19, 1916, to Clarence and Hannah (Dullum) Albertson. She was baptized at the Aspelund Lutheran Church near Flom, and confirmed in the Syre Lutheran Church in Syre, MN. Clarice first attended Flom Elementary School. After her parents moved to Syre in 1925, she attended the Meadowland District 16 School through the eighth grade, where she was an exceptionally bright student, winning several spelling bees. In her pre-teens and early teenage years, Clarice was a constant helper to her mother, taking care of younger family children and housework. She then worked in restaurants in Ada, MN, and Twin Valley as a waitress for several years.
On October 17, 1936, Clarice was united in marriage to Ingvald "Bing" Hovde in Ada. The couple farmed in Lake Ida, Rockwell, and Wild Rice Townships and in 1945 they moved into Twin Valley. Clarice worked at the Twin Valley Creamery for 17 years as a milk tester and a bookkeeper. After the creamery closed, she worked in the Twin Valley School cafeteria for many years where both students and staff enjoyed her culinary skills. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she was active in the ladies groups and enjoyed sewing and needlework. Another favorite pastime was bowling and being a good bowler at that. Clarice bowled on a league for many years and has several trophies to show for it.
Clarice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her many family members wherever they were living in the United States. She enjoyed their visits as well as traveling and visiting them. Clarice always had a positive outlook even with the hardships of losing her husband at an early age in 1966, and losing her son in 1996.
After selling her house, she lived for a number of years at the Valley Pines in Twin Valley, where she made many new friends, especially her daily newspaper puzzle-solving cohorts. Clarice then moved to the Living Center for several years where she always enjoyed humor with other residents.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Beverly Hovde of Twin Valley, MN; grandchildren Rhonda (John) Degelau of Minneapolis, MN, Stewart (Khristi) Hovde of Pelican Rapids, MN, Steven Hovde of Minneapolis, MN; great-grandchildren, Hailee Hovde, Zachary Hovde and John Degelau; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Albertson of Fergus Falls, MN and Mazel Albertson of Burbank, CA; brother, Vernon (Bernice) Albertson of Roseville, MN and many nieces and nephews.
