Obituary

Clarence Beaulieu, 75, Rice Lake, MN, died on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Mahnomen Health Center, Mahnomen, MN.

Clarence M. was born April 28, 1932, on the White Earth Indian Reservation, the son of Robert and Jenny Mae (Smith) Beaulieu. As a young child he lived in Naytahwaush, MN, until moving to Flandreau, SD, to attend school. After graduating from Pipestone school he returned to Rice Lake. Clarence served his country in the Untied States Army. On April 1, 1954, he was united in marriage to Rosella Stevens in Bagley, MN. The couple made their home in Rice Lake where they began logging. Clarence worked many years planting trees for Stinars Nursery before becoming a supervisor for White Earth Tribal workers. Clarence also worked briefly laying tracks for the railroad before his retirement. Up until the last year, he also dug all of the graves out at Rice Lake Cemetery. Clarence continued to make his home in Rice Lake with his family until recently when declining health prevented him from doing so.

Clarence loved spending time in the woods and observing nature. He was a skilled carver and spent his spare time making diamond willow canes. Clarence spent many hours hunting, gardening, and working on his lawn. He was often known to drive around on his lawnmower helping the neighbors with their yard chores as well. A wonderful cook, Clarence used fresh produce from his garden and always had supper ready for Rosie when she arrived home from work. Clarence also enjoyed playing Bingo and Keno and listening to karaoke. He was active with the Rice Lake youth and various softball leagues. He was a dedicated coach to the Rice Lake Girls Softball team for many years. Clarence truly treasured his grandchildren and each one held a special place in his heart.

He is survived by his wife, Rosie of Rice Lake; five daughters: Mary Beaulieu of Bagley; Millie (Kelly) Beaulieu of Naytahwaush; Gloria (Myron) Beaulieu of Bagley; Janice (Dave) Pergl of Mahnomen; and Lynn Beaulieu of Bagley; two sons: James T. (Julie) of Mahnomen and Clarence Bruce Jr. (Laura) of Bagley; three adopted children: Kit and Pam Grove, Irene Auginaush; one sister, Betty Thompson of Bagley; 41 grandchildren, including Ron and Paula Valiant, 27 great-grandchildren; and two special friends: Mike Cudmore and Richard Armstrong.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; one sister; one son, Larry; and four daughters, Carol, Alice, Violet, and Mildred.
