Obituary

Charlotte Paskey, age 92, of Waubun, MN, died on Friday, January 3, 2020, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, Mahnomen, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Charlotte Ann Slette, the daughter of Oscar and Alvina (Goodrich) Slette, was born September 21, 1927, on the farm in Norman County.  She was baptized and confirmed in her Lutheran Faith at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Twin Valley, MN.  Growing up, Charlotte attended country grade school and graduated from Mahnomen High School with the class of 1945.  Following graduation, she worked at the OPA office issuing ration coupons.  The war ended that fall and Charlotte began working for Dr. Franta, the dentist in Mahnomen.  On October 2, 1948, Charlotte was united in marriage to Donald Paskey at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.  The couple made their home in Waubun and she continued working for the dentist.  Charlotte left Dr. Franta's office following the birth of her oldest son, Wayne, in 1950.  Their family would become complete with the addition of sons, Rodney in 1951 and Erwin in 1953.  Charlotte's most important job was raising her family and being a loving wife and mother.

Charlotte was an Avon representative and worked at Kersting's Grocery Store and also a site manager for Senior Meals.  She worked and retired from the Mahnomen County Chamber of Commerce in 2009, after 20 years of dedicated service assisting travelers with questions, maps and general friendly conversation.

The couple had a cabin at McCraney Lake, where they would spend their summers with family, eventually they built a home on the lake and in later years they wintered in Texas.  Don and Charlotte loved to travel, seeing both their family and the country.

Following Don's death in 1992, Charlotte remained in their home on McCraney Lake for an additional four years.  In 1996, she purchased a home in Waubun to be closer to family and friends.  Charlotte lived in her house until 2009, when she moved to Evergreen Apartments in Waubun.  She later moved to Mahnomen Assisted Living Apartments and has made her home the past few years at the nursing home.

Charlotte truly loved the Waubun community and she worked willingly and faithfully on many church and city committees in support of improving her community!  As an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun, Charlotte participated in ladies aid, church circles and served in several other facets of the church.  She was also very active in the city of Waubun; volunteering for March of Dimes and spear heading many money-raising projects.  She kept busy with her kids' activities and was the President of the Band Mothers and a Cub Scout Den Mother.  Charlotte was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and WAMO for many years.

Family was an important piece of Charlotte's life.   She always enjoyed cooking for family and those family gatherings that would bring both close and distant family members together to catch up with each other.  She treasured those precious times with her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter as well as extended family and friends.  She also liked baking (divinity was a family hit), canning, especially chunk dill pickles, sewing, crafts, and reading.

Charlotte is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter: son, Wayne and his wife, Nancy Paskey of Fort Myers, FL, and their daughter, Kari (Rob) Fritch and their daughter, Brenna Paskey;  son, Rod Paskey of French Town, MT, and his children: Joey, Robert and Brad Paskey; and son, Erwin and his wife, Jean Paskey of Maple Falls, WA and their children, Shawn and McKenna Paskey.  She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Grace Nichols of Detroit Lakes, MN; step-sister, MaryAnne (Maynard) Gross of Homer, AK; step-sister-in-law, Adis Dombu of Las Vegas, NV; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband, Don, she was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Alvina; step-mother, Gunvor Slette; daughter-in-law, Bette Paskey; brother, Paul Slette; sister, Gladys Tilleraas and step-brother, Sivert Dombu.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waubun.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.  Burial will take place in the Waubun City Cemetery, Waubun.
