Charles Mattsen, age 58, of Mahnomen, MN, died Friday, Feb 28, 2014 of pancreatic cancer.
Chuck Mattsen was an incredible man. Charles Frederick Mattsen was born to Audrey Johnson Mattsen and Joseph L. Mattsen on December 19, 1955. Chuck ,as his friends so fondly called him, studied Mathematics at Gustavas Adolphus. He worked from his home in Mahnomen as a language specialist/transcriber and as a freelance proofreader. One of the most intelligent people you'd ever meet, Chuck was nonetheless humble and never boastful about his superior intellect or his Mensa worthy IQ. He was a man of quick wit, humor, and the endless capacity to care for his friends all over the world.
Chuck loved cats and, when diagnosed with cancer on his birthday in December, his first thought - and, he admitted, his only worry - was providing a loving future for Chester, his beloved ginger cat. Although he lived a solitary life by choice, he cultivated incredible friendships around the world and considered himself blessed by their friendship, recently saying, "How many people do you know who are lucky enough to maintain daily or weekly contact with people they have known for 20 or 40 years?" Chuck was that kind of person.
Chuck loved helping people (virtually, of course, through the internet), knew everything about so many topics, and was always willing to help his friends with their technical questions and problems. His postings on Facebook were often his friends' "cup of coffee" to start the day, and we all will miss reading of all the arcane, funny, touching, and incredible things he would find on the internet every day and delightfully share with anyone who read his posts.
The internet (and Facebook in particular) is a much darker place since his passing. He was dearly loved by many and leaves a giant hole in many hearts.
