Charles (Chuck) Elvin Bernhardson, 91, of Shelly, MN, a devoted family man and dedicated farmer known for his work ethic and community spirit passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the Fargo Elim Healthcare Center, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and a deep love for the land.

Chuck was born on February 11, 1934, in Holy Cross Township near Comstock, MN, to Elvin and Florence Bernhardson. One of eight children, he was baptized at Clara Church in Comstock and later confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. He attended school at Rustad and Moorhead before graduating from Glyndon High School. Following graduation, Chuck moved with his parents to rural Shelly to help initiate the family farming operation, raising grain and dairy cattle.

In 1955, Chuck volunteered for the U.S. Army. He served for two years, primarily as a radio operator on a Y-66 tanker out of Fort Eustis, Virginia. After his service, he returned to the Shelly area to farm with his father and brothers. It was during this time he met Helen Folstad; the two were married at Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church on June 25, 1960.

Chuck built a home in Shelly and established a thriving farming operation where he produced registered wheat, barley, soybeans, and sugarbeets for American Crystal Sugar Company. He felt a deep connection to the sugarbeets, honoring his father's legacy as a pioneer of the crop in the Red River Valley; yet, despite his dedication to the land, his children and grandsons were his top priority, and he took great pride in never missing their sporting events or activities.

Though he officially retired from farming in 1992, Chuck's heart never left the field. For many years, he was the first to volunteer his time helping fellow farmers during the busy planting and harvest seasons. He found great peace in the seat of a mower, spending countless hours meticulously grooming his farmyards and the ditches surrounding his land to ensure everything was kept in pristine condition.

Chuck was a faithful member of Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church, where his deep trust in God was the foundation of his life. He attended services regularly and lived out his faith through dedicated service as a church trustee and as the sexton for the Marsh River Cemetery. Chuck viewed caring for the cemetery grounds as a sacred duty and a quiet way to honor both the Lord and his community. His steadfast belief guided him in every role, from farming the land to raising his family.

The Christmas season was the highlight of Chuck's year, filled with the warmth of numerous family gatherings. He took immense joy in his annual tradition of traveling to Hawley to pick up a bounty of Carl's Lefse, which he took great pleasure in distributing as gifts to his many friends and family members throughout the community.

Music held a special place in Chuck's heart. He loved listening to Helen play the piano at home, during church, or at special programs, and he could often be found listening to country music while driving. He was a man who truly never met a stranger, possessing a "gift of recognition" that allowed him to instantly identify friends from decades past.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Helen; three children, Cary (Shannon) Bernhardson of Scottsdale, AZ, Dan (Leigh) Bernhardson of Fargo, ND, and Lori (Corey) Waloch of Goshen, KY; four grandchildren, Alex, Evan, and Owen Bernhardson, and Aaryn Waloch; and his brother, Ed Bernhardson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Elvin Bernhardson; siblings: Drell, Betty, Lucille, Lois, Helen, and Wally.

The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shelly‑Marsh River Lutheran Church in Shelly, MN. Following the service, a celebration of life and fellowship will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the church, featuring taco‑in‑a‑bag and ice cream, two of Chuck's favorites.
