Obituary

Celestine Ceceilia (Haider) Neisen, age 90, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Monday, June 5, 2023, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND after suffering complications from surgery.

"Sally" as she wanted to be called, the daughter of John and Rose (Schoenborn) Haider, was born on April 21, 1933.  She grew up on the family farm in LaGarde Township.  On January 12, 1954, Sally was united in marriage to Mathias "Math" Neisen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu, MN.  They spent the rest of their lives making a home together on the original farm Math was born on.  Besides the household duties, Sally was a farmer, milked cows, raised chickens, and worked in the field.  She raised a huge garden of fruits and vegetables and canned many jars of food each harvest season.  She also had beautiful flower gardens.  Sally and Math welcomed eight children into this world.  They lovingly raised their three sons: John (Pauliann), Mike (Brenda), and Darrell, and five daughters: Diane (Al) Stangel, Marlene (Steve) Klinkhammer, Nancy (Del) Grinolds, LuAnn (Lyle) Berg, and Michelle (Paul) Benson.  As time progressed and Math battled Alzheimer's Disease, Sally cared for him as long as she was able.  After 57 years of marriage, Math passed away on October 1, 2011, and Sally remained in her home on the farm.

Sally loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings with grandchildren and great grandchildren all around her.  It was so noisy and full of laughter.  She always felt she had to be passing around candy or treats.  For many years, she went on girl's weekends with her daughters and daughters-in-law to rummage sales, dining out, and playing cards.  Sally was often the settling voice telling her girls to settle down or they would get kicked out of the hotel.  They shared so many fun times together. She also enjoyed going for coffee with neighbors and friends.  Sally was truly honored to have received the Golden Deeds award in 2021, for her years of volunteer service.  Besides the love of her family, Sally was proud of the many beautiful quilts she made, with love, for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She donated many of these quilts to fundraisers, benefits, and church functions, along with many hours of volunteer time.  Because of her many years making coleslaw for the St. Joseph's Fall Dinner, Sally respectably earned the title of "Cabbage Lady" of which she was so proud of.  Sally instilled her moral and ethical values in all her children, and volunteering time back to the church. She was very proud that they taught their children the same. Throughout her entire life, Sally was a woman of strong faith.

Sally is survived by her eight children; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren plus one on the way; and one great great grandchild; as well as two brothers, Melvin Haider and Dennis (Corrine) Haider; and three sisters: Valarie Becker, Corrina Sanden, and Delores Remmick.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose; her husband, Math; three brothers-in-law: Jerry Becker, Elmer Remmick, and LeRoy Sanden; and one sister-in-law, Lillian Haider.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Beaulieu, MN, with visitation and a Rosary beginning at 9:00 a.m. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, June 8, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the church.  Interment will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
