Obituary

Carol "Jeanne" McDougall, age 77, of Naytahwaush, MN, died Friday, September 1, 2017, at Essentia Health Systems in Fargo, ND. Carol Jean Goodwin was born on December 21, 1939, to Florence (Turner) and George Goodwin Sr. She attended school in Cass Lake, MN, before moving to Naytahwaush, MN, in the third grade. Jeanne was united in marriage to Leonard "Sonny" McDougall on November 9, 1957, in Naytahwaush. They made their first home in Grand Portage, MN, followed by Thief River Falls, MN. The couple later moved to Ely, MN, where they would spend the next 20+ years before returning to Naytahwaush in 1987. Sonny became ill and passed away in November of 2015; Jeanne remained in their home. In May of 2016, at the age of 76, Jeanne graduated from the White Earth Tribal and Community College with an Associates of Arts Degree with emphasis in Humanities, Arts and Social Science. Jeanne always took an active role in education. Over the years, she worked with and mentored students during their high school and college years. Jeanne was an active member of many local and state Indian Education committees, where she and her colleagues paved the way for Indian Education throughout the state and nation. Jeanne was a founding member of the American Indian Advisory Committee at the University of Minnesota Morris, and she remained an active member until she passed. Many have attributed their success to the guidance and encouragement from both Sonny and Jeanne. Jeanne took pride in her Native American traditions, engaging in the old traditional ways. She enjoyed ricing, the art of birch bark and loved to attend pow-wows and other traditional ceremonies. She also loved family gatherings - very seldom did she miss any. Jeanne's genuine personality and pleasant smile will be missed by many. She was very caring and humble, and yet she was a character. She had a rare, witty and silly sense of humor, and loved being labeled as "Most Beautiful Auntie". Jeanne truly saw everyone's gifts and encouraged all her nieces and nephews in ways that made them just have to succeed. She took the time to know each of them, touched their hearts and was exceptionally honest when that was needed. Jeanne was sassy, loving, sharp-witted and fiercely loyal; she was everything packed into one small package. Jeanne is survived by two brothers, Lyle Goodwin and Robert "Scrub" (Kathy) Goodwin, both of Naytahwaush, MN; three sisters: Ann (John) LaVoy also of Naytahwaush, Gloria "Tudy" Nepstad and Lois "Petey" Olson, both of Mahnomen; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Goodwin of Detroit Lakes, MN; numerous nieces and nephews and Miss Kitty. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sonny; one sister, Juanita Ortiz; two brothers, Charles "Butch" and George "Dode" Jr; two sisters-in-law, Ethelbert Goodwin and Katherine "Honey" Goodwin; two brothers-in-law, Myles "Ole" Olson, and Leland "Nep" Nepstad. Blessed be the memory of Jeanne McDougall. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Samuel Memorial Episcopal Church in Naytahwaush.
