Carman Frederick Dahl was born on November 16, 1933, to Olaf and Cora (Hagy) Dahl, on a farm east of Gary. Carman was one of nine children. He began helping on the family farm at a young age, taking on more responsibilities at the age of 13, after his father passed away. He attended grades 1-8 at the Gary Public School, before attending the Agricultural College in Crookston, MN for three years and graduating in 1951. Following graduation, he continued his lifelong passion of farming - milking cows and growing grains. On June 16, 1957, Carman married Beverly Jacobson, at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. Together, Bev and her handsome dimpled "Carmy" enjoyed weekly card games with close friends and family, where laughter was never in short supply. Over the span of 20 years, they were blessed with 5 children: Cherie, twins - Brett and Brent, Tiffany, and Brandyn. In addition to farming, Carman kept busy serving in many capacities for Waukon Township, Norman County, and as a devoted lifelong member of Ness Lutheran Church. After a seemingly short battle with heart complications, Bev unexpectedly passed away in February 1994. Carman farmed for over 50 years and decided to retire "early", at the age of 75. Carman was blessed with good health most of his life, never spending a night at a hospital, until his last few weeks while recovering from surgery.
Known for being a quiet, gentle, and hardworking man, Carman was loved by his family and community, where he was often recognized by his memorable laugh. He always had time to take a trip to the casino in hopes of seeing friends for lunch and coffee. While at the casino he would try his luck at blackjack, bingo and slot machines, which that luck never seemed to fade.
In Carman's later years, he became hard of hearing, but loved seeing friends and family, mowing lawn, having coffee and cookies, and driving around to check fields. With being only a few miles apart, Carman, Clarice, and Marion were great at looking out for one another, as they all lived alone on the farm, calling each other several times a day.
Carman is survived by his children: Cherie (Joe) Boe, Brett (Michelle) Dahl, Brent (Lisa) Dahl, Tiffany (Toby) Ellingworth, and Brandyn (Debi) Dahl; 12 grandchildren: Whitney Boe, Jennifer Jorud, Ryan Dahl, Keegan Dahl, Chantel Dahl, Collyn Dahl, Brandt Dahl, Ryker Ellingworth, Ramsey Ellingworth, Kayliana Dahl, Cadyn Dahl, and Ellidi Dahl; three great-grandchildren: Cora Claymore, Tilly Claymore, and Jackson Jorud; siblings: Marion Rude, Clarice Ose, Lillian Bennefeld, Janet Nelson, Norman (Leona) Dahl, and Walter "Bobby" (Eileen) Dahl; in-laws: Harlen (Elaine) Jacobson, Judy (Dale) Sites-Clermont, Kathy Borgen; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Carman was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 37 years, Beverly; parents: Olaf and Cora; parents-in-law: Bennet and Gladys Jacobson; siblings: Harry Dahl and Florence Drellack; special companion, Waetta Martinson; and brothers-in-law, Vernon Rude, Larry Ose, James Bennefeld, Vincent Nelson, Elmer Drellack, LaVern Sites, and Steven Borgen.
Carman Dahl, 89, of Gary, MN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND, surrounded by his family.
May God forever bless the memory of Carman Frederick Dahl.
