Carlton Melting, 80, Halstad, Minnesota, died of complications of Parkinson's disease on Friday, October 22, 2010, at the Halstad Living Center, surrounded by his family.

Carlton Stewart Melting was born on July 8, 1930, in "Little Chicago" near Halstad. His parents were John and Nora (Tvedt) Melting. He was baptized at home and confirmed at Halstad Lutheran Church. He attended Halstad Public School.

Carlton was united in marriage to Ruth Nelson on January 27, 1951 at the Shelly church parsonage in Shelly, Minnesota. Carlton was affectionately known as "Carp" or "Sonny". Carlton was a dedicated and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather who always put others first. His smile, stories, and laughter lit up a room and lifted everyone's heart with his gentle spirit. He had great pride and devotion to his love of vegetable gardening. Carlton's life's work was in agriculture. He loved the land and the outdoors. His heart was brave and he never had a harsh or unkind word towards others. He will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Carlton is survived by his wife, Ruth, his children, Susan (Jerome) Triepke, Fargo, ND, Stewart Melting, Dilworth, MN, Cynthia (Daniel) Ess, Bemidji, MN, Terry (Elizabeth) Melting, Moorhead, MN, Katharine Austin, Eau Claire, WI, Laurie (Ted) Anderson, Audubon, MN, and Barbara, (Dave) Aasland, Bemidji, MN, 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, two sisters, Lyla Gilbertson, Breckenridge, MN, Loretta Solberg, Fargo, ND, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, David and John, and one sister, Marlene Bennitt.

Memorial Service: 1100AM Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.
Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.
