Obituary

Carlton Joseph Roed, 88, and Hazel Lorraine Ellen Flermoen Roed, 88 of Mentor, MN, died in an automobile accident on Monday, February 2, 2015, rural Borup, MN.

Carlton was born on March 5, 1926, to Nels Jorgen and Olga (Ruud) Roed in rural Fertile, MN. Carlton attended country school and the Fertile High School, Fertile, MN. As a Junior in High School, Carlton was drafted into the United States Army and trained as an Airborne Paratrooper. He attained the rank of Sergeant serving in the Philippines and Japan. Carlton had the privilege of being at the signing of the Armistice ending WWII. He was honorably discharged on September 9, 1946. He returned to the Fertile area and purchased a farm near Mentor.

Hazel was born on January 12, 1927, to Olaus Llewellyn and Ellen (Erickson) Flermoen in St. Paul, MN. Hazel attended country school near Winger, before graduating from the McIntosh High School, McIntosh, MN, in 1944. Hazel continued her education at Thief River Falls Teacher School, Thief River Falls, MN. Hazel lived in Winger, MN, and worked in various country schools.

On June 25, 1949, Carlton and Hazel were united in marriage at Gosen Lutheran Church, rural Winger, MN. They made their home on the farm with Carlton's brother Orvis, and his wife, Hazel's sister, LilyAnn. Orvis and LilyAnn moved to other areas, and Carlton and Hazel were able to reside in this home for more than 65 years. Hazel taught school for one year after they were married and Carlton operated a dairy farm and raised grain. Over the years they raised sheep, horses and chickens, as well as a large garden to supply all their canning needs. Carlton was also employed at Detroiter Mobile Homes, Red Lake Falls, MN, working in the cabinet department. After several years of raising her four children, Hazel began teaching school. She also began taking classes at Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN, to earn her teaching degree in Special Ed. and Elementary Education. She taught in the Mentor School District until retiring in 1991. Carlton retired in the late 1980's, farming for a few years before renting the land. They were both longtime members at Maple Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fertile.

During their retirement years, Carlton and Hazel were busy. Together with Carlton's sister Lorraine, they made a lifelong dream trip to Norway, discovering their shared rich heritage. Traveling around the country to family events and celebrations allowed them to keep up with their family's growth. Hazel took up quilting, making every child and grandchild a treasured quilt. Carlton continued with his passion of wood working. He refinished furniture for family and friends, built all sorts of useable and crafty items, and created much needed shelving and supplies at Maple Lake Lutheran Church. At church, Carlton and Hazel were very active members. Their presence ensured that the physical and spiritual life of the church was constant and stable. Their generous nature allowed them to support their church and many organizations that were in need. Hazel was a member of WELCA, Church Circles, and Christian Women's Group, and Quilters Of Valor club. Carlton was active at church cleaning and maintaining the church property, as well as serving as Church Financial Secretary for approximately 40 years. Together, they were a team that brought love, joy, and peace to many. As a couple, Carlton and Hazel were true examples of unselfish, giving love and devotion toward each other. May God richly bless our memories of them.

Carlton and Hazel are survived by their children: Bruce (Deb) Roed, Mentor, MN; Linda Cornelison, Henderson, NV; Candace (Kyle) Nordine, Northfield, MN; and Sandra (Phil) Norgaard, Clear Lake, MN; nine grandchildren: Eric, Cherie, Carl, Matt, David, Marie, Andy, Emily and Nick.
