Burtis "Burt" Hyatt, age 92, of Mahnomen, MN, formerly of Waubun, MN, died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Burt was born December 12, 1917 in Onawa, IA, to Alvin and Clara (Miller) Hyatt. He attended school in Onawa and graduated with the class of 1936. Following graduation, Burt entered the United States Army and served until March of 1938. He then came to the Waubun area and was united in marriage to Marie "Baby" Adams on May 31, 1939. They were blessed with one daughter, Jean.
Burt and Marie made their home east of Waubun where they farmed. He reenlisted with the Army, serving during WWII and was honorably discharged in July of 1946. Beginning in 1951, Burt worked at the Waubun Post Office as the Postmaster until his retirement in 1983. Baby died in 2000 and Burt continued to live in Waubun and kept busy with countless hours of hand carving many beautiful fish and duck decoys. One of his true passions was fishing big Northerns in Canada. Burt was a long time member of Lake Grove Lutheran Church and also a past member of the Ogema VFW Post #9880. He entered the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in the fall of 2006.
Burt is survived by a granddaughter, Connie (Kerry) Skersick of Detroit Lakes, MN; three great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Donald (Donna) Adams of Mesa, AZ; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Adams of Fargo, ND. In addition to his wife, Baby, Burt was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jean; four sisters and one brother.
A Memorial Service was held Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 11 am at Lake Grove Lutheran Church, rural Waubun, MN , the officiant was Rev. Doyle Turner. The organist was Sue Heisler and special music provided by Margaret Thompson. Military rites were provided by the Ogema VFW Post #9880. A time of gathering was held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Inurnment was at Lake Grove Lutheran Cemetery, rural Waubun.
