Beverly Joyce Hams (Floberg), 84 of Shelly, MN, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, in Lincoln, NE.
She was born Jan. 12, 1932, in rural Halstad, MN (Holm family farm) to Cora Floberg (Holm) and Alvin Floberg. Bev attended grade school at Shelly in the "new school" which is now the Red River History Museum. Bev talked of herding cows while playing Monopoly with girl friends on a homemade game board fashioned with her "Printing Set". Bev attended school during the WW2 in Portland, OR, while her dad worked in a ship yard. The family returned to Shelly and Bev graduated high school at Climax, MN, in 1950.
Bev and Lloyd (a WW2 veteran from Warroad, MN) started dating when she was 16. They were married July 23, 1950 in Shelly Lutheran Church. They lived in Fargo, and then worked their way to the west coast while Lloyd built grain elevators in MN, ND, OR, and Washington; and at Rohr aircraft in Chula Vista, California. Bev and Lloyd decided California wasn't for them so they returned to Halstad, MN, in 1954 where sons Rob and Kit were born. Bev's father died in 1953 and her mother remarried in 1958. Willard McDonald became a wonderful part of their lives for 30 years. One of Bev's first jobs was driving a beet truck for Willard. They moved to Bridgeport, NE in 1959 and remained until 1974. During that time, Bev was a Cub Scout leader, meat cutter, book keeper and retirement center manager. She was very active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They moved to North Platte, NE, in 1974, built a new home and she was employed as a bookkeeper for Dowhower Construction. In 1980 they moved to Harrisburg, NE, where Bev was a clerk for the county judge.
Following retirement in 1990 they returned to Shelly where they were active in the community and in SMR church activities for the remainder of their lives. They enjoyed trips to Warroad and Lake of the Woods. Lloyd died in 2006 and Bev remained in Shelly until 2013 when she moved to Sanford Comstock - Hillsboro retirement center. She spent the last 6 months of life in Lincoln, NE in "Assisted Living" where she enjoyed the company of her "great" grandkids.
Beverly is survived by two sons, Kit, Lincoln, NE; Rob (Joanna), Fairbanks, AK; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and stepfather; brother (Mardell); sister (Alvina) and grandson (Neil).
