Betty Lou Peterson, 90, Halstad, MN, died Saturday February 3, 2018, at River Pointe Assisted Living, Moorhead, MN, after a brief illness.

Betty Lou was born November 2, 1927, the fourth daughter and eighth child to Henry and Selma (Stundahl) Smith on a farm near Galesberg, ND. When she was eight years old the family moved to a farm west of Page, ND, where she grew up and was confirmed at Page Lutheran Church. She later moved with her family to Chaffee, ND, where they lived for two years until moving to Halstad where Betty Lou graduated from Halstad High School.

On June 16, 1951, Betty Lou was united in marriage to Arnold "Pete" Peterson in Halstad. They made their home in Halstad where they raised their son, John. Betty Lou worked at various jobs including Noel's Grocery Store and the Halstad Shopper until retiring.

Betty Lou was a member of Halstad Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. For many years, she was an active member and officer of the Halstad American Legion Auxiliary, where she was dedicated to making and selling many poppy's. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and always looked forward to playing cards and board games with them. She was known to be a "little competitive" and held her own in many Pinochle games. Betty Lou also enjoyed traveling and had been to Norway and Disney World. She also had a passion for fishing and looked forward to gatherings at the lake. She had a special Rommegrot "Mush" recipe that other family members requested.

Arnold passed away in 1997, and Betty Lou continued to live in Halstad until this past year, when she moved to Moorhead. She is survived by her son, John (Wanda) Peterson, Glyndon, MN, her 3 grandchildren; Robert "Bobby", Taylor, and Danielle (Nick) Weller, and a great grandchild expected this summer. Also surviving are her sisters; Phyllis Farrell, Dalton, WI, Thelma Burkle, Fargo, ND, and Shirley Fleith, Jamestown, ND; her brother, Donald (Doris) Smith, Dalton, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
