Obituary

Betty Remark Johnson, 92, formerly of Ada, Minnesota, died April 1, 2018, at Ecumen Evergreens of Moorhead, Minnesota.

Betty was born October 1, 1925, in Ada, to Alfred and Clarice (Pfund) Remark. She graduated from Ada High School in 1943. She attended the University of Minnesota and graduated as a Registered Nurse as part of the Cadet Nurse Corps program. She worked in the psychiatry wing of the Minneapolis VA Hospital at Fort Snelling. Betty married classmate Delford "Punk" Johnson on August 20, 1948, at the Congregational Church of Ada. They raised three children in Ada: Clare, Barbara, and Paul. Delford died in 2000.

Betty was actively involved in the life of her church and community. She and Punk enthusiastically supported Viking/Cougar athletics and other school activities with their time and resources. They were on the original board of directors for the Ada Scholarship Foundation and they, along with three other alumni, were the first recipients of the Viking/Cougar Reunion Distinguished Alumni Award. She was also one of the organizers of the Ada One-Fund Drive. Betty's life was one of joy as she embraced the gifts of friendship and the simple pleasures of life – golfing, quilting, reading, entertaining.  She also knew profound grief. Her faith was quiet and strong and she lived her life with courage, gratitude, and grace.

Betty is survived by daughter  Clare (Marv) Degerness, Moorhead; step-granddaughter Liv Degerness (Chad Morgan), Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Liv's children Caleb, Bella, Tristen, and Chase. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Dorothy Remark, Sharon Remark, and Audrey Johnson, and fifteen nieces and nephews (one niece deceased) and their families.

She is preceded in death by husband Delford Johnson, daughter Barbara (1978), son Paul (1982), brothers Louis Remark and Robert Remark, brothers-in-law Ronald Johnson and Merton Johnson, sisters-in-law Glenna Johnson and Jocelyn Bennefeld, and niece Julie Austin.
