Betty Lou Houglum, 89, of Twin Valley, MN, died Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Betty Lou Olson was born at home in rural Twin Valley on August 23, 1924, the daughter of Arnold and Selma (Lee) Olson. Her grade school years were spent at Cheerful Nook Country School followed by Waubun High School where she graduated with the class of 1942. After graduation, she attended Business College for a year. Then Betty Lou moved to Seattle, Washington, working at the Boeing Plant assembling war planes. She became a WWII "Rosie the Riveter" and with her small frame was one of very few that was able to assemble the wings of the B-17 and B-29 aircrafts.
In 1946, Betty Lou was united in marriage to Allan Houglum. The couple made their home in the rural Waubun, MN, area. Together they had two children, Bonita and Brad. Over the years, she kept busy baking, sewing, taking care of the children and helping Allan in the field. She loved to garden and had huge gardens and flower beds when she was able. She also had a special love for cats. Betty Lou was very active in Aspelund Church, serving on the ladies aid and as a Sunday school teacher for almost 40 years. Betty Lou looked after Allan, nurtured her children and later her grandchildren and was always the caregiver until her health began to fail and she moved into the nursing home in March of 2012.
Betty Lou is survived by a son, Brad of Waubun; a daughter, Bonita (Bill) Corwin of Brooklyn Park; five grandchildren: Christopher, Angela, David, Pamela and Kaela. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Gordon.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, MN.
Visitation was held Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 5 until 7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Twin Valley.
Visitation continued one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Interment was in Aspelund Lutheran Cemetery, Flom, MN.
