Obituary

Betty Jean Hariluk, age 77, of Mahnomen, MN, died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Essential Health, Fargo, ND.

Betty Jean Smallwood was born July 5, 1936, at home in Rudy, Arkansas, to Earl and Mae (Lovejoy) Smallwood. She attended school in Cedarville, Arkansas, through the 9th grade. Following her schooling, Betty worked in a hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas, as a nurse's aide. While in Fort Smith, Betty met Walter "Duke" Hariluk and they were happily married on April 2, 1954. After Duke's tour of duty was completed, they moved to a small farm north of Mahnomen, Minnesota. In addition to raising their growing family, Betty also assisted Duke with the farming, trapping, and daily chores. She worked for a few years at the Red Owl Grocery Store, followed by employment at the Swift Plant in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Over the years, Betty worked for many years at Grief Brothers Stave Mill, south of Mahnomen, Nortex Sewing Plant at the Ranch, and Mahnomen Health Center before retiring from being a cashier at the Shooting Star Casino.

Betty loved her family, especially the periods she was able to care for her kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren as they were growing up. In her spare time, Betty, liked to garden and can the fresh produce of her labors. Spending time visiting with everyone, including all her friends at Valley View Apartments in Mahnomen, was an absolute must. She was a pleasure to be around and will be greatly missed by all.

Betty is survived by three sons: John (Rhonda) of Sioux City, Iowa; Paul of Mahnomen, and Donnie of Lengby, Minnesota; four daughters: Roberta (Bud) Tallman of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Sherry (Mike) Vik, Sheila (John) Dorn both of Mahnomen; and Gina Lee of Bagley, Minnesota; three sisters: Pat Blain, Vanburan, Arkansas, Earleen Lattin and Madilin Hollond, both Alma, Arkansas; 19 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and many step grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Lola; one brother, Keith; two daughters-in-law, Janet Hariluk and Paula Robinson; and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral Services was held on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen. Visitation was held one hour prior to the funeral service.

Interment took place at Riverside Memorial Park, Mahnomen.
