Bernice F. Schon's Obituary
Bernice Florence Schon, 95, died on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN. She was born on December 29, 1917, to Lars and Ida (Lindberg) Schon at home in Garden Township, rural Fertile. Bernice was baptized at home and confirmed in 1932 at St John's Lutheran Church, rural Fertile. She attended Riverside Country School near her home. Bernice remained with her parents, caring for them through their illnesses and their deaths.
In 1957, she received a Bible Study certificate through the Lutheran Bible Institute in Golden Valley. This further prepared her to serve many years as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, Release Time teacher, and Superintendent of the St. John's Lutheran Church's Sunday School for over 50 years. Bernice continue to teach young people until 2012 at the Hope Evangelical Free VBS.
After her father died in 1962, she began to work at Bergerson Nursery. After 20 years of tending to the greenhouses, planting, and weeding, she retired. Bernice also tended a large garden and yard of her own. Her yard was always manicured and enhanced with an abundance of flowers. She enjoyed canning the fruits and vegetables from her garden, cooking, embroider, sewing many of her own clothes. She loved visiting with neighbors sharing her canned jams and jellies, along with God's word. Her nieces remember well their visits that included fresh lemonade, spritz cookies, fresh cresent rolls and her homemade jam.
Although Bernice never had children of her own, she remained close to her nine nieces and three nephews. Over the years she babysat for them and spoiled, loved and cared for them as though they were her own. She loved children and had found joy in teaching and caring about all the children she had met through her teachings.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 10 AM in the Hope Evangelical Free Church, Fertile, MN. Visitation will one hour before the services.
Burial will be in the St John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fertile, MN.
