Obituary

(Irene) Bernice Albertson, age 87, of Roseville, MN, passed away into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, July 5, 2015, at St. Therese Palliative Care Community in Shoreview, MN, after a six year battle with frontotemporal dementia.

She is survived by five children, Eric (Jan) of Anoka, MN, Leif (Edselrose) and Todd (Martha) all of Arden Hills, MN, Ann (David) Jackson of Minneapolis, MN, and Kara (Richard) Mencel of Egan, MN; 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Vernon, parents, Ingvald and Bertha Hanson, a sister and two brothers.

Irene Bernice Hanson was born March 25, 1928, the youngest of four children born to Ingvald and Bertha (Haugen) Hanson near Twin Valley, MN. It was here that she grew up and attended a one room school house, participated in 4-H and helped her mother and father with many chores. She attended high school in Twin Valley, and had many fond memories of growing up on the farm. She was able to recall fun stories from her childhood, well into her last several years of dementia.

Bernice graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, in 1950 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught that subject in Ulen, Minnesota, during her first year out of college. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon, in 1951. Bernice then began an adventurous life of raising children, taking care of pets, creating a loving home and supporting her children in their many activities. Each of her five children was born in a different State or U.S. territory. She was faithful in prayer and love, as each of her children followed their own unique paths in life and needed to find their own way. She also maintained an eternal love and support for her husband as he served in the military, continued his education through Master's and Doctorate degrees, and advanced his career.

Bernice was an extremely loving wife, mom, grandma, daughter, sister, aunt and friend with a servant's heart. Always a gracious hostess while entertaining, she was a tremendous cook, baker and homemaker. She has left a legacy of the love of cooking and baking in many of her children and grandchildren, especially teaching them the art of lefse making. Bernice instilled in her family her deep faith in God along with the power of prayer. She was very active in church, teaching Sunday school for 15+ years. She had a passion for flowers, gardening, birds and wildlife that still lives on through her children and grandchildren. Bernice also enjoyed reading, walking, jogging and racquetball throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by her family.
