Beatrice R. Merkens' Obituary
Beatrice Ramona Merkens, 87, of Halstad, MN, died on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the Halstad Living Center, Halstad, MN. She was born on May 26, 1929, to Arne and Carville (Olson) Anderson at Halstad, MN. Beatrice attended school in Halstad, graduating at the Halstad High School.
On June 22, 1947, Beatrice was united in marriage to Merlyn Merkens at Augustana Lutheran Church, rural Halstad. They lived St. Paul, MN, for a short time before returning to Lockhart, MN. In the late 1940's, they moved to rural Halstad, where they farmed and raised their three children. Beatrice sold Fuller Brush and worked for Aalgaard Studios, Ada, MN, colorizing photos. Beatrice assisted with farming in the early years and cared for the home and family as the years went by. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and served as an officer with the ladies aid. She also volunteered at the Halstad Living Center, working in the beauty shop. They moved to Halstad in 2006, after the farmstead had been flooded several years in a row. Merlyn died in 2010 and Beatrice moved to the Heritage House in 2012.
Beatrice and Merlyn traveled throughout the country and had many adventures while traveling. Together, Beatrice and Merlyn enjoyed dancing, visiting with family and friends, and spending time at their lake home on Lake Maud, near Audubon, MN. Beatrice loved and adored her family, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Beatrice is survived by two sons and a daughter: Bradley (Tammy), Halstad, MN, Chaun Merkens, Kindred, ND, and Blayne (Gayle), Halstad, MN; five grandchildren: Jacob, McKeag (Fiancé, Rachel Arneson), Stuart (Katie), Quinn, and Bryer; and three great-grandchildren: Alex, Olivia, and Charlie Borne; one sister: Carol Hansen, Moorhead, MN; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Merlyn, and brother, Wayne Anderson.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at 2 PM in the Augustana Lutheran Church, rural Halstad, MN.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Halstad Living Center, Halstad, MN, from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM.
Burial will be in the Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, rural Halstad, MN.
