Avis Ashmore, age 88, of Ulen, MN, died Friday, September 30, 2016, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.
Avis was born at home in Clay County on August 16, 1928, to Herbert and Hilda (Hogenson) Bickel. She grew up on the family farm near Ulen and attended country school in that area. As a young woman, Avis helped her parents on the farm. At a ceremony on her parent's farm, Avis was united in marriage to Cortland "Corky" Ashmore on November 20, 1948. The couple made their home in the Ulen area and together they farmed for several years. They were blessed with two sons, James and Barry. When her children were young, she would spend part of the fall season working the potato harvest with area neighbors. She was a devoted wife and mother and was the true image of a homemaker. Avis was a terrific baker and her family and friends could always count on enjoying her famous chocolate chip cookies. Her world revolved around her family and caring for them is what was most important in her life. Avis loved spending time with all of her friends and family, but truly treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her tender heart and loving smile will be forever remembered.
Avis is survived by two sons, James (Wanda) Ashmore of Ulen, MN and Barry (Brenda) Ashmore of Clear Lake, MN; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Bickel of Detroit Lakes, MN; two sisters, Medora Hogetvedt of Ulen, MN and Shirley (Wayne) Davies of TX; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Bev) Ashmore of Moorhead, MN; a sister-in-law, Irma Hendrickson of Ulen, MN, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters: Norma, Virgie, Ellen and Vera; a sister-in-law, Donna; and brothers-in-law, Clinton, Leo, Leslie and Waldo.
A private memorial service will be held.
