Arlo was born September 22, 1932, on the family farm in Beaulieu, MN, to Richard and Martha Ruth (Leslie) Hegg. He attended school at the South School in Beaulieu. His jobs included working at a barrel stave factory that made wooden whiskey and wine barrels that were shipped overseas. Arlo then went to work at Ford Implement Company where he was a mechanic specializing in Wisconsin engines.

In 1981, he began caretaking at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen, a job he enjoyed immensely. It became his pride and joy and he made sure everything was perfect. Arlo continued to work there until he was 81 years old!
Arlo met Shirley Ann Darlene Stene at a dance at the "Flowing Well". He knew right away that she was the one! On June 27, 1959, Arlo was united in marriage to Shirley at the Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley, MN. They have been happily married for 61 years and constant companions and caretakers to each other.
Arlo's hobbies including gardening, woodworking and redesigning engines and go-carts. He even built his own car and trailers. He was a jack of all trades. Arlo loved to joke around with everyone and was quite a prankster throughout his life!
