Obituary

Annabelle Walz, age 90, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Friday, June 12, 2020 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in Mahnomen.

Annabelle Schmoll, the daughter of Johannes and Sophia (Pawlikchek) Schmoll, was born near Waubun, MN, on August 16, 1929.  Growing up on the family farm taught her hard work and independence. At the age of 13, Annabelle began working at area resorts cleaning cabins and later with Schermerhorn Ranch.  When Annabelle was just 15, she and a friend moved independently to Fargo, ND.  As a young woman, she worked at DeLendrecie's Department Store during the week and returned home to Mahnomen on the weekends to waitress at local café's. On January 9, 1954, Annabelle married the love of her life, Louis Walz, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun. They made their home in Mahnomen and were blessed with two children, Leland and Allan.  She always stayed busy as a mom of two young boys, but Annabelle also picked potatoes several seasons and the family dutifully delivered the Sunday paper for 18 years.  She had a large vegetable garden and often canned her produce.  In her younger years, Annabelle liked to fish and loved garage sales but as she aged, she preferred watching her soap operas and chatting about the stories with her friends.  She also liked to play cards, go on picnics, and scenic drives through the woods. Annabelle was known to be an independent, feisty, and a hardworking woman who would say exactly what was on her mind. Following Louis' death in 1995, Annabelle remained in her home in Mahnomen.  She continued to live on her own until 2018, at which time she moved to the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, where she has resided since.

Annabelle is survived by her two children, Leland (Mary) Walz of Mahnomen, MN, and Allan (Vonnie) Walz of San Antonio, TX; five grandchildren: Dawn (Andrew) Welch, Carrie (Ronnie) Stevens, Danielle Walz, Terry Walz, and Danny Walz; five great grandchildren: Jacob Fonda, Alyson Welch, Andrew "Buddy" Welch Jr., Catlin Stevens, and Isabell Stevens; and several nieces and nephews.

Annabelle was preceded by her husband, Louis Walz; her parents, Johannes and Sophia; and two brothers, Floyd and Dennis Schmoll.
