Obituary

Alvina Lydia (Wilkens) Marsten, 100, of Ada, MN, died on Thursday, October 30, 2014, in the Benedictine Care Community, Ada, MN. She was born on January 29, 1914, to Johann and Elisabeth (Rehfinger) Wilkens in Pleasant View Township, rural Ada. Alvina was baptized and confirmed at Pleasant View Lutheran Church near Hadler, MN.

Alvina attended Washington District #54 Country School near her home. In 1929, Alvina's father passed away and her mother and she moved to Ada. In 1931, Alvina began working at the C.R. Andrews home for the next four years.

On May 12, 1935, Alvina was united in marriage to Arnold Marsten. Alvina then began working part time for Wampacks and then at Hartz and Red Owl Grocery stores for the next 20 years. Arnold passed away in 1960, at the age of 53. Alvina continue to stay busy at the Chi Chi's Restaurant and Mini Mall. She entered the Benedictine Care Community in April of 2011.

Throughout the years Alvina was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, and its ladies aid. She was an active member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary also in Ada. She proudly took care of her yard and garden, freezing and canning her garden vegetables. Alvina was making afghans and doilies up into her late 90's. She made dozens of doilies, several table clothes, and many afghans; two of her projects were especially important to Alvina, one of the Lord's Prayer, a wall hanging, and another of the American Flag with 50 handmade stars (made when she was 91 years old). Over the years, Alvina sold many of her creations at area craft shows. Her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren have all received afghans to remember Alvina by.

Alvina is survived by two daughters, Janice Self, Ada, and Mary Gravalin, Fargo, ND; 4 grandchildren: Elizabeth (David Graening) Gravalin, Michael (Renee) Gravalin, Thomas (Rhonda) Gravalin, and Debra Roesch (Kevin), 7 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
