Alvin A. Von Holdt, 84, of Hoyt Lakes, MN, formerly of Fertile, MN, died Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Grand Village Memory Care, Grand Rapids, MN.
Alvin Andrew Von Holdt was born at home on February 18, 1930, near Beltrami, MN. His parents were Andrew and Bertha (Jenson) Von Holdt. He was baptized and confirmed at Hafslo Lutheran Church near Beltrami and attended country school in Onstad Township. He later earned his G.E.D. He worked for Spring Gravel Company near Beltrami and also farmed. Alvin joined the United States Army and served one year stationary in Washington State. After that period, he was in the Army Reserves. He was called into active duty, served in Korea in the 49th F.A. 17 Regiment 7th Division in 1950-51. He was a survivor of the Chosin Reservoir Campaign and decorated for his service. He was proud to have served his country.
He attended Hanson Trade School in Fargo, before working for Carmi Carson Mine at Hibbing, MN, for 5 years. Alvin was united in marriage to Evelyn Hedrich on February 8, 1958. They lived in Embarrass, MN for 5 years and moved to Hoyt Lakes where they lived for 51 years. Alvin retired from Erie Mining-LTV Mining, as a train operator after 33 years of service. Alvin was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes. He was also a member of the Chosin Few and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Alvin is survived by his wife: Evelyn, of Hoyt Lakes, two children: Bruce (Lori) Von Holdt, Bemidji, MN, and Lori (Scott) Karppinen, Grand Rapids, MN, 5 grandchildren: Eric (Jennifer) Von Holdt, Alexandria, MN, Nickolas (Bryna) Von Holdt, Bemidji, MN, Andrew Karppinen, St. Paul, MN, Jessica VonHoldt, Boise, ID, Ethan Karppinen, Bemidji, MN, 4 great grandchildren: Lucas, Eliana, Claire, Molly, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, five sisters-in-law, Betty Von Holdt, Fosston, MN, Helen Nelson, Hillsboro, ND, Dorothy Hanson, Ada, MN, Marcella Olson, Crosby, MN, and Orville Hedrich, Hill City, MN. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents: Andrew and Bertha, a brother; George, and sister: Dorothy.
Funeral: 2PM Friday, October 10, 2014, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.
Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.
Burial: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, MN.
