Alvin "Gig"
Leroy Gigler
May 15, 1929 — Oct 1, 2018
Alvin "Gig" Gigler, 89, Fertile, MN, passed away on Monday October 1 st , 2018 at the Benedictine Care Community in Ada, MN.
Gig was born May 15 th , 1929 at the family's home in Green Meadow Township near Ada MN, the son of Frank and Martha (Duenow) Gigler. He was baptized and confirmed at St John's Lutheran Church, rural Ada, and he attended country school near Ada.
Soon after the Korean Conflict broke out in 1950, Gig joined the U.S. Army and his unit was deployed to Korea. Following his discharge from the Army, Gig returned to the Ada area where he met his future wife, Frances (Fran) Hanson, and the two were married on April 21, 1956. Gig and Fran farmed while raising their family. During those years, they received help from Gig's nephews, Byron and Dwight Gigler. After a tornado did significant damage to the farm, Gig left farming and learned the auto body repair business. He moved his family to White Bear Lake for two years but came back and settled in Fertile, Minnesota, where he worked first for Harold Gilbertson and then Mark Broden. Gig later went to work for Lynn Lucken in Winger, Minnesota, where he remained until his "first" retirement. When it came to painting cars, Gig was a perfectionist and took great pride in his work. After his "first" retirement, he went to work for Lee Nursery, and loved that he could be outside and working with nature.
As a veteran of the Korean Conflict, Gig was very proud of his service. Anyone who thanked him for his service would be guaranteed a smile. Gig was also proud of his many years as a volunteer firefighter in Fertile.
While Gig's passion was gardening, he also loved bird watching and napping with his pets. He loved eating anything sweet and could not be trusted around his kids' Halloween and Easter candy. He had an extra sparkle in his eyes when he was able to share his candy and his laughs with his granddaughters, even to his last days. Gig was known for his sense of humor, quick wit and easy going way. He always had a twinkle in his blue eyes and was quick with a smile and a laugh. If you knew him, you liked him. As one person once said "Who wouldn't love him?"
Gig is survived by his wife Fran, Benedictine Care Community, Ada, 3 children, Debi (Larry) Hagen, Moorhead, Doug (Lisa) Gigler, Fargo and Pixi Macicek, Hitchcock, TX. He was a proud Grandpa to 3 grandchildren, Molly (Trevor) Wilson, Hannah Hagen, both Moorhead, and Cade Macicek, Hitchcock, TX. Gig is survived by one sister, Arline Gigler, Benedictine Care Community, brothers Leslie (Lois) Gigler and Denny (Jan) Gigler, both Ada, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosebell Gigler and brothers Robert Gigler and Lawrence Gigler. Written by Molly Wilson
