Obituary

Alma York, age 88, of Vandalia, OH, died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in Mahnomen, MN. Alma A. Vebrosky, the daughter of Peter and Gertrude (Visockis) Vebrosky, was born on February 7, 1924 in Minersville, PA. She grew up in Minersville and attended school there. Following her high school graduation, Alma moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for the government during WWII. On June 2, 1945 Alma was united in marriage to Donald W. York. The couple remained in the Washington D.C. area until Donald completed his service time. They then moved to Dayton, OH and raised two sons, Donald and Robert. In the mid-1970's Alma and Donald moved to Ada, MN to be closer to their grandchildren. Together they operated Al's Café in Ada for many years. After selling the café, they returned to Dayton for their retirement. Donald passed away in Aug of 2000 and Alma remained in OH until recently when she moved to Mahnomen to be with her son, Don. Alma is survived by one son, Don York of Mahnomen; five grandchildren: Jeff (Steph), Scott, Laurie (Casper), Daniel, and Jon; five great grandchildren: Hailey, Josie, Jimmy, Waabishki Maiingan, and Jordan; her sister, Ann Oaks; and dear friends, Bob and Jane Schlein. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Gertrude; her husband, Donald; and her son, Robert. A family gathering will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 12:30pm until 2:00pm at the Morton and Whetstone Funeral Home in Vandalia, OH with burial to follow in Dayton National Cemetery at 3:00pm. Arrangements are entrusted to Anderson-Mattson Funeral Home, MN and Morton Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia, OH.
