Alice Steichen, age 90, of Ulen, MN, died Monday, January 7, 2019 at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.

Alice Myrtella was born on March 28, 1928 to Lars and Clara (Romslo) Peterson near Lake Park, MN. She was raised in the Lake Park and Audubon area where she attended country school. As a young woman, she worked in a café, the laundry in Detroit Lakes, and a country store. Alice was united in marriage to Charles "Roy" Steichen on October 26, 1957 at the First Lutheran Church in Audubon, MN. The couple made their home near Ulen on a farm. To this union, six sons and a daughter was born. They raised their family on the farm where she was active in all parts of farm life. Once the kids were older, Alice worked at the lefse plant in Hitterdal for a number of years before becoming an employee at Viking Manor Nursing Home as a CNA. In her last years of working, she worked in the Assisted Living area of the home before her retirement in 2003. After Roy's death in 2004, Alice remained living on the farm for two more years before moving into town. Following a stroke, she moved into the Viking Manor Nursing Home in September 2018 where she made her home until her passing.

Her family was Alice's true passion, along with quilting, gardening, and baking. She frequently could be found with a pen in her hand solving a crossword puzzle or writing the Walworth News for the Ulen Union paper. Alice was also very involved with her church in the quilters, circle, and the ladies aid. She was a member of the Walworth Homemakers and the Ulen Senior Center. Alice had a generous heart and helping hand. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Alice is survived by one daughter, Judy (Ken) Winkler of Meridian, ID; five sons, Gary (Shelley) of Hawley, MN, David (Pastor Jill) of Dilworth, MN, Lyle (Darika), Dennis (Thanya), and Kevin, all of Ulen; one sister, Angie Steichen of Ulen; 19 grandchildren: Jacob, Philip, Anthony, Mark, Luke, Paul, Grace, Samantha, Allison, Emily, Molly, Kenna, Anna Mae, Ken Jr., Jennifer, Melissa, Christopher, and Clement;  and 4 great-grandchildren: Brett, Casey, Ava, and Einar. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; one son, Alan; and one brother, Paul.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 PM, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ulen, on Thursday, January 10, 2019.  Visitation will also be one hour before the funeral at the church on Friday. Interment will take place at the West Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ulen.
