Alice Hilde, age 101, of Ulen, MN, died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.
Alice C. Syverson was born October 12, 1912, in Ulen Township, the daughter of Oscar and Gena (Kolsrud) Syverson. Her youth was spent on the farm and attending country school then Ulen Public School. As a young lady, Alice worked for the Lokken family as a housekeeper.
On October 30, 1935, Alice was united in marriage to Melvin O. Hilde. The couple made their home on the Syverson Farm and began a family. Alice kept busy with helping Melvin with the chores in addition to all the baking, sewing and tending to the children. In 1942, the family moved to a farmstead in nearby Hagen Township, where they lived for many years. Alice and Melvin moved into Ulen, across from Bethlehem Church, in 1966. It was at this time Alice began cooking at the restaurant in Ulen. As well as her cooking at the restaurant for many years, she also cooked at the Ulen Senior Center. Melvin died in 1988 and shortly thereafter, Alice moved to the Agassiz Apartments. She later moved to Northern Lights Assisted Living, followed by Viking Manor, where she has made her home since 2009.
Alice was an excellent cook and baker, making and selling lefse and donuts. She always had homemade cookies on hand and she enjoyed dishing out her impeccable potato salad and jello during Turkey BBQ Days….before anyone had their turkey.
Besides baking and cooking, Alice loved to quilt. Too numerous to count, she made baby quilts, lap quilts, queen size and many more. Quilting brought a sparkle to her eye and she continued to sew until her eyes would no longer allow her. Alice also loved when her grandchildren were around. She liked to visit so having everyone over for a get-together was always a special time for her. Alice was a long time member of Bethlehem Church and Ladies Aid.
Alice is survived by her children: Orvin, Ulen, Carol (Joel) Rehder, Dilworth, MN, and Brent (Brenda), Felton, MN; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a special Goddaughter, Arlene Kjos, Hitterdal. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter and son-in-law, Arlene (Fred "Fritz") Sprunk; an infant son, Donald; sister and brother-in-law, Gladys (Morris) Hanson and brother and sister-in-law, Olai (Kathleen) Syverson.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen. Visitation was held on Monday, February 17, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service at the church. Internment was at West Bethlehem Cemetery, Ulen.
