Alice A. Shaw was born May 1st, 1932, the daughter of John and Lena (Swenson) Shaw on the family farm near Felton, Minnesota. She was raised on the family farm and attended grade school in Hagen Township. Alice graduated from Felton High School with the class of 1950. On October 28, 1950, she was united in marriage to Gisle Hilde in Moorhead, Minnesota. They made their home in Moorhead for a short time before moving to the Ulen, Minnesota community to begin farming. Gisle and Alice operated their farm west of Ulen for the next 46 years before selling it to their son. Alice was active in the farming operation that she and Gisle had. She could be found in the barn milking, feeding cattle, doing field work, hauling grain or doing anything else needed on the farm. She had a special love for working with their livestock, which went back to her childhood days of helping on her father's farm. In addition to her farm work, Alice kept busy as a full-time homemaker and mother of their five children. After their children were raised, she worked at area beet pilers for many sugar beet harvests. During the early 1990's, Alice was employed at Ron's Super Valu in Hawley. In 1997, they moved into Ulen where they have lived since.
Alice was a lifetime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen and it was there that she was baptized and confirmed. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid and the Bethlehem Quilters. Alice enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting and playing both whist and bingo. Almost everyday, Alice spent time at the Senior Citizens Center in Ulen, where she was currently the secretary.
