Alex R. McKenzie, age 56 of Mahnomen, MN, died Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Innovis Health Systems in Fargo, ND.
Alex was born March 24, 1953 in Fosston, MN, the son of Jack and Dorothy (McKenzie) Antell. He grew up with his grandparents, Henry and Grace McKenzie in the Lengby, MN, area and attended school in Fosston. Following his schooling, Alex entered the United States Army serving during Vietnam. After he was discharged, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he made his home, meeting Maxine Nicol in 1981. The couple moved back to this area, living in Mahnomen, Bagley, MN, and Lengby. In 1999, they settled in Mahnomen where they have lived together since.
Alex enjoyed having people around him and visiting. He especially treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandkids and great-granddaughter, Mystic. The two of them had a special bond. Alex also passed the time of day by piddling on his cars and watching wrestling on television. He was a collector of many clocks and watches. He will be greatly missed by all who were a part of his life.
Alex is survived by his significant other of 28 years, Maxine Nichol, of Mahnomen; sons: Robert McKenzie of Missouri, Anthony (Melissa) Smith of Minneapolis, MN, Nathaniel Kieffer of Wendell, MN, and Tony Stelter of Minneapolis; daughters, Tonya Nicol of Colorado, and Tammy Hall of Mahnomen; brothers, Earl Hodgkins of Mahnomen and Charles McKenzie of Waubun, MN; half sister, Carol Swenson, of Naytahwaush, MN; grandchildren: Amanda Hall, Amber Helps, Alex Kieffer, Nick Kieffer, Tristan Thompson, Angel Thompson, Autumn Smith, Isaac Thoreson and Dillon Smith; and great-granddaughter, Mystic Hall.
Alex is preceded in death by his parents; grandsons, Alan Thompson and Joel Nicol; and a brother, Eugene "Skip" McKenzie.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 11 am at the Sports Complex in Naytahwaush, MN. Visitation took at the Sports Complex beginning at 5:00 pm on Monday, November 2 and continuing throughout the night with a prayer service at 7 pm.
Interment was at Lengby City Cemetery.
