Obituary

Albert "Lenny" Swanson, age 90, of Waubun, MN, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Albert Leonard Swanson, the youngest son of Ole and Ethel (Sundblad) Swanson was born in Erhard, MN, on October 17, 1931.  He grew up on the farm and attended country school.  After his schooling, Lenny entered the work force for a time before joining the United States Army.  He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict where he earned the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, in addition to other medals.  Following his honorable discharge, he met the love of his life, Marlene Martin.  They were united in marriage on October 7, 1955, in the Little Brown Church in Dale, IA.  The couple made their home in the Twin Cities area and Lenny worked at the Armour Meat Packing Company until 1962, when they purchased a farm east of Waubun.  Together they were blessed with four children.  Lenny farmed and raised cattle for 54 years.  In addition, he also worked for the US Forest Service for 25 years.  Marlene died in September of 2004 and Lenny remained on the farm.  In January of 2018, he moved to the nursing home where he has since made his home.

Lenny was a true outdoorsman.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cutting wood, and hunting, especially deer, and everything the great outdoors had to offer.  Hardworking, patriotic, determined and caring are all words to describe him.  He had a team of horses that he diligently hooked up and worked every day, no matter the weather.  Lenny loved his family and had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was an active member of the Waubun-Ogema VFW Post, always marching in parades, honoring deceased veterans and helping out whenever needed.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lenny is survived by two sons, Larry Swanson and Glen (Sue) Swanson, both of Waubun; one daughter, Monica Roepke of Benson, MN; one son-in-law, Eugene Haider of Waubun; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Swanson of Detroit Lakes, MN, and nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene; one daughter, Marci Haider; and one brother, Vernon Swanson.

Blessed be the memory of Albert "Lenny" Swanson.
